The Night I Got Stabbed

You wouldn't think plopping down on the couch would get a girl stabbed, but it did. As soon as my butt hit the cushion, I felt a sharp pain in the heel of my right foot. I raised my leg to see what had caused this piercing agony, which was protruding from my heel.

It was this.

My 6-yo daughter, the youngest, left the pin on the back open and dropped it onto the carpet. She'd caught it being tossed out during a children's parade.

But back to this thing sticking out of my foot. So I was wailing in pain as I shoved my foot into my husband's face screaming at him to pull it out. He did. It was sort of creepy the amount of force he had to exert in order to release it from my heel. It didn't bleed, but it did sting like a you-know-what. The better part of the sharp end had made its way into my flesh.

My poor baby girl felt so bad for leaving her pin on the floor. She cried and hugged and kissed me. She apologized a hundred times. So I hugged and kissed back and told her everything would be okay. My husband made me an ice pack, and I went to bed.

All night last night I was tossing and turning, kicking around the ice pack and popping ibuprofen. Of course, the ice pack leaked freezing water all over the foot of the mattress. Yay.

This morning, realizing I hadn't had a tetanus shot in...um, well, I don't know, I began to feel a bit anxious. The puncture wound didn't look infected or discolored at all. It just sent near-crippling pulsating pain up the back of my leg. I thought it'd be better being safe than sorry, so I went to Walgreens and got a tetanus shot. I was also vaccinated for diphtheria and pertussis in the same injection. I should be cootie-free for a while now.

Just another adventure being a mom, right? It's not the first time I've stepped on something the kids have left on the floor. And I am certain it definitely won't be the last.
